Some Sikh religious and community sources, drawing on Guru Gobind Singh’s letter Zafarnama, describe the Battle of Chamkaur as an episode where about 40 Sikhs faced an army of around 1 million Mughal and allied hill‑raja troops, and emphasize the Sikhs’ heroic resistance.[1][3][4][5][6] However, mainstream historical accounts and reference works still treat these numbers as highly exaggerated or symbolic, and they consistently record the battle outcome as a Mughal victory in military terms, noting that most of the Sikh defenders were killed and Guru Gobind Singh escaped rather than the Sikhs defeating the attackers.[2][4][7][8] There is no independent, critical historical evidence that one million soldiers and 40 kings literally attacked and were then defeated by 40 Sikhs; the figure and “victory” framing come from devotional or traditional narratives rather than verifiable military history.[1][2][3][4]

Devotional Sikh sources and some community writings accept the “10 lakh vs 40 Sikhs” description at face value and present Chamkaur as the greatest war in history where 40 Sikhs stood against 1 million and prevailed spiritually or morally, sometimes even claiming 1,000,000 enemy dead.[1][5][6] By contrast, academic historians and reference works either do not endorse such numbers or explicitly regard them as exaggerations, instead describing a much smaller but still overwhelming Mughal‑hill forces coalition and a Mughal military victory with very heavy Sikh losses.[2][4][7][8] This creates substantial dissent between devotional/traditional narratives and critical historical scholarship on both the size of the Mughal force and whether the Sikhs “won” the battle in a literal military sense.
