Credible dissent

There is broad agreement that a violent, election-related attack by Trump supporters occurred at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, aimed at disrupting certification of Joe Biden’s victory, and that this attack is widely described as an insurrection or attempted coup.[1][6][10] However, substantial dissent exists over Trump’s precise role and the characterization of the event: the House January 6 Select Committee and various legal and academic analyses describe Trump as the central cause of a multi-part conspiracy to overturn the election and recommend criminal charges including aiding an insurrection.[2][5][6] In contrast, pro-Trump narratives—including material hosted on the Trump White House website—deny that January 6 was a Trump-orchestrated insurrection, portray most protesters as peaceful, and claim Democrats “staged the real insurrection” by certifying the election.[9] Academic work also notes that, while the event can be understood as a failed attempt to overthrow the government, criminal charges for “insurrection” have rarely been brought against participants, and there is no court ruling that Trump himself committed insurrection.[8]
