Authoritative sources, including TikTok’s own U.S. privacy policy and government investigations, state that TikTok may collect and use biometric data such as faceprints and voiceprints derived from users’ video and audio content.[1][2][3][6][11][12][15][16][17] A 2025 joint investigation by Canadian privacy regulators specifically found that TikTok’s technology does in practice collect and use biometric information via facial and voice analytics, although its implementation was not built to perform facial recognition or identify individual users directly.[2][16] While the company’s representatives have at times suggested that certain biometric processing is done on-device and deleted after applying filters, regulators and independent analyses still describe TikTok’s systems as collecting numerical representations of physiological features (biometrics) to infer demographics and other traits.[2][10][18] There remains uncertainty and criticism about the scope, retention, and purposes of this biometric collection, but there is broad agreement that TikTok’s platform and policies permit and employ biometric data collection rather than explicitly prohibiting it.[2][3][6][11][12][15][17]
