Multiple authoritative news outlets and seismic agencies report that on July 28, 2026, a powerful earthquake of about magnitude 7.1 (later also described as 6.8 by USGS and Chinese networks) struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan’s southwestern island of Kyushu, causing severe shaking, damage, injuries, and a tsunami advisory, meeting any reasonable definition of a “major” earthquake hitting Kyushu.[1][3][6][7][8][12][16][17]
