Scientists at the University of Minnesota have reported, and multiple reputable outlets have covered, the creation of a lab‑assembled synthetic cell (“SpudCell”) built entirely from nonliving chemical components that can feed, grow, replicate its DNA, and divide, marking what they describe as the first cell built from scratch to complete a basic cell cycle.[1][4][6][7][9] However, although this is widely framed as a “first synthetic cell from scratch,” the work is not yet peer‑reviewed, and experts emphasize that SpudCell is not a fully autonomous living cell and that earlier “synthetic cells” with synthetic genomes were created by the J. Craig Venter Institute using a top‑down approach.[5][8][11]
Credible dissent
There is both historical and conceptual dissent about calling this achievement the “first synthetic cell from scratch.” Earlier landmark work by the J. Craig Venter Institute produced self‑replicating bacterial cells controlled by synthetic genomes (JCVI‑syn1.0 and JCVI‑syn3.0), which they describe as synthetic cells, though these started from existing cellular scaffolds rather than being assembled entirely from isolated nonliving components.[8][11] In addition, recent review literature notes that, as of 2024, building a fully functioning cell “from scratch” has not yet been accomplished, suggesting that the current SpudCell work, while a major step, does not achieve a fully autonomous living cell built de novo.[11] External experts quoted in media coverage explicitly caution that SpudCell is not yet true “life created in the lab,” cannot divide over many generations, and requires carefully orchestrated nutrient input, thereby contesting a literal reading of the claim that scientists have fully built the first synthetic cell from scratch.[3][5]
