Peer‑reviewed research and multiple news reports confirm that a transmissible melanoma‑type skin cancer has been identified in brown bullhead catfish in Lake Memphremagog on the Quebec–Vermont border and in additional lakes in the northeastern United States, making this the first documented transmissible cancer in a freshwater fish species.
